Paul Thurrot ha pubblicato su Windows IT Pro un lungo articolo descrivendo quali saranno le prossime versioni di Windows Vista. Sembra infatti che Vista si presenterà sul mercato in ben sette versioni divise in due macro categorie: Home e Business.
Si andrà dalla versione ridotta battezzata Windows Vista Starter Edition, pensata per i mercati asiatici e dunque per Pc di bassa potenza, alla Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, un concentrato di caratteristiche avanzate diretto a Pc con elevata potenza:
Windows Vista Ultimate Edition: The best operating system ever offered for a personal PC, optimized for the individual. Windows Vista Ultimate Edition is a superset of both Vista Home Premium and Vista Pro Edition, so it includes all of the features of both of those product versions, plus adds Game Performance Tweaker with integrated gaming experiences, a Podcast creation utility (under consideration, may be cut from product), and online “Club” services (exclusive access to music, movies, services and preferred customer care) and other offerings (also under consideration, may be cut from product). Microsoft is still investigating how to position its most impressive Windows release yet, and is looking into offering Ultimate Edition owners such services as extended A1 subscriptions, free music downloads, free movie downloads, Online Spotlight and entertainment software, preferred product support, and custom themes. A livello di marketing mi sembra un’ottima idea la differenziazione del prodotto Windows segmentato per venire incontro alle diverse fasce di utilizzatori mentre a livello di rilascio di eventuali patch di sicurezza vedo con molta preoccupazione la frammentazione degli update declinati per varie versioni di Windows. Già oggi i programmatori Microsoft faticano a patchare un solo sistema operativo (Windows XP) figuriamoci quando si avranno ben sette versioni di un OS con differenti applicazioni inserite e dunque differenti bugfix da rilasciare.
